Democratic Unity In New Hampshire

Previous Posts

By Jamie Dupree

I wonder if they are selling t-shirts in Unity, New Hampshire today that say "CLINTON-OBAMA *SOLD OUT* Unity Tour 2008?"  Okay, just kidding.

But today's get together in New Hampshire is very important on one level, because it will be the first time that we have really seen the two former rivals together for any period of time since Obama clinched the Democratic nomination.

Really, it's another step in terms of bringing the Democratic Party together for November, as Clinton tries to show that she's not a sore loser.

Remember, Unity is the theme and Obama proved that last night when he ponied up $2,300 of his own money to help Hillary retire her campaign debts.

Wonder if he will mention that in Unity today.

"It's not only well named," Clinton said of the town in New Hampshire at a Washington, D.C. speech, "but in the New Hampshire primary, both of us received exactly 107 votes."

I'm asking you to do everything you can to elect Barack Obama the next President of the United States," Clinton said to loud cheers at a nurses convention in Washington.

It was sort of a warm up for her in public, as she gets ready to stand on stage with the winner.

The plan of course was for Obama to have to suck it up and do this, not Hillary.

Meanwhile, we got two conflicting pieces of poll evidence from recent days, which have definitely witnessed an Obama "Unity" bump in the polls.

A Quinnipiac University poll showed Obama leading McCain in four swing states for November, with leads in Colorado, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota.

That was in line with other polls in recent days.

Not in line with that, though, was a Survey USA poll that showed McCain up seven points in Missouri, another bellwether state.

Not only is Missouri a "bellwether" but it's a damn good bellwether, as only once in the last 25 Presidential elections has Missouri not gone to the winner.

Back to Hillary.

She will most likely give an inspiring speech and not have any bad moments on the stump with Obama in Unity.  She gave a very good speech when she conceded and I wouldn't expect anything less today.

But she will be measured this year by how much work she does for Obama - not behind the scenes - but how much she wants to go out and beat the bushes for the Illinois Senator.

We certainly have had examples in recent memory of vanquished primary candidates who basically do all they can to avoid such duty.  That was true of Reagan in 1976 and Kennedy in 1980.

Gary Player once said of Jack Nicklaus, "Everybody talks about what a great winner Jack Nicklaus was; I always tell them what a great loser he was."

Hillary Clinton now has just over four months to prove that to us how good they are at losing too.  And the same goes for Bill Clinton, too.
