'The Jeffersons' actor Sherman Hemsley dies

El Paso Police keep news crews at distance as the body of 'Jeffersons' actor Sherman Hemsley is removed from his home, Tuesday, in El Paso, Texas. Hemsley, 74, was the star of several TV shows, including "The Jeffersons" and "Amen."

El Paso, Texas, police have confirmed to television station KFOX that actor Sherman Hemsley, star of "The Jeffersons" has died at his home in El Paso. (Read KFOX-TV's coverage here.)

TMZ.com also reports: Hemsley, who was 74, became famous during his appearances on "All in the Family."  The spin-off, "The Jeffersons" was a monster hit.  He also starred in the TV show, "Amen."  He was also a professional singer and even released the single in 1989, "Ain't that A Kick in the Head."

KFOX posted on its Twitter account: El Paso Police keep news crews at distance as the body of 'Jeffersons' actor #ShermanHemsley is removed from his home.

According to People.com, Hemsley was an accomplished stage actor before being offered the role of Archie Bunker's neighbor, George Jefferson, on the CBS sitcom "All in the Family" in 1973. Two years later "The Jeffersons" became a successful spin-off series, lasting 11 seasons.
