Rays' rise leaves Reds with one fewer excuse
Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Some thoughts as I attempt to go another day without paying attention to the Olympics:
• I've never rooted for the underdog just for the sake of it, but I'm glad the Tampa Bay Rays are doing well if only to debunk the popular notion that small-market baseball teams have little chance in today's game.
Seeing Tampa Bay, Minnesota and Milwaukee contend for the playoffs should give Reds fans hope — or at least arm them with an attitude that says we're sick of all the losing and we're going to withhold support until something changes.
• Is it too early for TV execs to start panicking about giving the Browns five prime-time games? Sure, the preseason means zip, but that did cross my mind as the New York Giants rolled up a huge lead the other night.
That the Browns rallied and ended up losing 37-34 perhaps calmed some network nerves.
• Not a good sign for the Dayton Bombers that high-scoring center Yannick Tifu requested and was granted a trade to the Florida Everblades last week.
Tifu clearly sees his chances of graduating to the AHL as being greater there than here. And that's troubling if you're the Bombers and you hope to sell players on the idea that you are their ticket to the next level.
Or maybe the kid just prefers a warmer climate. Sounds better at least.
• Wow, who would have guessed Ohio State football and the Browns were so popular among Ohioans? I'm going to start paying more attention to those Quinnipiac polls. No substitute for that kind of insight.
