Dragons survive tense ninth to grab win

MIDLAND, Mich. — Relief pitcher Aguido Gonzalez notched back-to-back strikeouts to close the bottom of the ninth inning with the tying run at third and the winning run at second as the Dayton Dragons held off the Great Lakes Loons 6-5 Friday, Aug. 15.
The Dragons overcame an early three-run deficit behind catalysts Devin Mesoraco, who went 4-for 5, Michael McKennon, who belted a two-run homer and went 2-for-4, and Jake Kahaulelio, who delivered the game's biggest hit, a two-out, two-run single in the seventh that put the Dragons in front.
Mace Thurman picked up the win, while Gonzalez earned his fourth save.
The victory bumped up the Dragons' lead in the Midwest League wild-card race to three games over Fort Wayne with 16 to play. The teams open a four-game series at Fifth Third Field at 7:05 p.m. tonight.
