Dragons power way to doubleheader sweep
Saturday, July 19, 2008
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Justin Reed drilled a home run and double, and Angel Cabrera added a triple and single with two RBIs as the Dayton Dragons completed a doubleheader sweep of the Cedar Rapids Kernels with an 8-1 victory on Friday night, July 18. The win was the Dragons' ninth in their last 10 games and improved their second-half record to 16-12. They won the first game of the doubleheader 4-3.
Just as they did in the first game, the Dragons hit a home run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead.
Zack Cozart drilled a two-run shot, his 11th of the year, to make it 2-0. Later in the same inning, Cabrera tripled with two outs to drive in Denis Phipps from first base to give Dayton a 3-0 lead.
The Dragons added two more in the second. Kevyn Feiner led off the frame with a single to center and went to third on Reed's double. Brandon Menchaca's groundout brought in Feiner, and one batter later, Reed scored on Neftali Soto's single to left to make it 5-0.
The Dragons added two more in the third, keyed by a triple by Phipps, to take a 7-0 lead. After Cedar Rapids scored its only run in the third, Reed drilled his 10th home run of the season in the sixth to close out the scoring.
The Dragons play at Clinton at 8 p.m. today. Daniel Guerrero (0-1, 6.46 ERA) will start for Dayton.
The Dragons' next home game is Wednesday against the Peoria Chiefs at Fifth Third Field.
