Loons hand Dragons a pair of last-at-bat losses
Friday, July 04, 2008
Midland, Mich. — The Great Lakes Loons swept a doubleheader fro the Dayton Dragons on Thursday, July 3, winning both ballgames with runs in their final at-bat.
In the second game, Francisco Lizarraga lined a base hit to center field to bring in Jovanny Rosario from second base with the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Dragons reliever Henry Arias (2-4) had walked Rosario with one out, and he stole second. After another walk, Arias struck out Alfredo Silverio, but Lizarraga followed with a base hit to give the Loons their second "walk-off" win of the night. The Loons' Game 1 win came in the bottom of the ninth of a scheduled seven inning game.
The Loons collected just two hits in the nightcap, but capitalized on seven walks from Dragons pitchers.
Dayton took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Angel Cabrera doubled with two outs and scored on Kevyn Feiner's single.
Great Lakes tied the game in the sixth on Silverio's leadoff homer — the first hit of the game for the Loons.
The losses dropped the Dragons to 6-9 so far in the second half of the Midwest League season.
In the first game, Erik Kanaby scored from second base on a throwing error by Feiner with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
The game-winning rally started when Kanaby drew a walk from Dragons reliever Zach Stewart. After Brandon Taylor was hit by a pitch, Jaime Ortiz grounded to Feiner at second, but Feiner's throw went wide of shortstop Zach Cozart at second in the bid to turn a double play. As the ball carried into shallow left field, Kanaby easily raced around to score.
The run wasted a great effort by Dragons starter Matt Klinker, who held the Loons to four hits and a run in seven sharp innings for Dayton
The teams meet again today at 3:05 p.m. Daniel Guerrero (0-1, 11.37) will start for Dayton.
