WIZARDS 4, DRAGONS 1

Dayton can't get offense going

Staff Report

Monday, June 30, 2008

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Starting pitcher Jeremy McBryde and four relievers combined to scatter seven hits as the host Fort Wayne Wizards defeated the Dayton Dragons 4-1 on Sunday, June 29.

The Dragons dropped to 5-6 in the second half with the loss. They will need a win in today's series finale to earn a split of the four-game set.

Wizards pitchers combined to strike out 13 Dayton hitters without issuing a walk. The Dragons had only two runners past first base after the first inning.

Dayton's only run came in the eighth. Justin Reed led off with a double off the glove of the shortstop and Keltavious Jones followed with a single to right to bring in Reed and make it 4-1. The Dragons did not have another hit the rest of the way.

Fort Wayne scored in the first against Dragons pitcher Kyle Lotzkar. Luis Durango singled, went to second when Andy Parrino walked, and scored on a one-out single by Danny Payne to make it 1-0.

The Wizards scored two runs in the third when Lotzkar issued three walks to load the bases and Yefri Carvajal delivered a two-out double to left to make it 3-0.

Lotzkar (0-3) left after four innings, allowing three hits and three earned runs with five walks and seven strikeouts.

The Wizards tacked on another run against Dragons reliever Derrick Conatser in the sixth. Felix Carrasco singled to left, went to third on Carvajal's single, and scored when Anthony Contreras grounded into a double play to make it 4-0.

The Dragons meet the Wizards again at 7 p.m. today to wrap up the series. Josh Ravin (2-4, 5.34 ERA) will start for Dayton.

• The Dragons' streak of at least one home run in 14 consecutive games came to an end.
