Cozart's late homer snaps 5-game skid
Friday, June 27, 2008
DAYTON — Neither rain nor extra innings nor the South Bend Silver Hawks could stop the Dayton Dragons from finally winning a game Thursday night, June 27, at Fifth Third Field.
Zack Cozart's two-out homer to left in the bottom of the 10th won the game 2-1 for the Dragons, snapping a five-game losing streak.
Rain held up the start of the game an hour and 45 minutes, and the Silver Hawks scored a run in the first inning, the 10th time in 11 games the Dragons allowed a run that early.
It stood up for seven innings as Silver Hawks starter Christian Beltre held the Dragons hitless until Cozart doubled to lead off the seventh. He scored one out later on Brandon Waring's single to center.
As usual, the Dragons allowed a run that shouldn't have scored.
After Eli Rumler doubled with one out and Mike Mee singled him to third, a double-play grounder was hit to third baseman Brandon Waring.
Waring threw to second, but the ball hit the dirt and second baseman Kevyn Feiner didn't have much of a chance once he picked it up to complete the double play, which allowed the run to score.
The Dragons had two on after scoring a run in the seventh with one out and couldn't score. They had two on with one out in the eighth and couldn't score, and left the bases loaded when Waring, the team's leading home run hitter, grounded into a force out to end the inning.
In the ninth, with two out, Devin Mesoraco singled with two out, but was left at first.
South Bend pitcher Clay Zavada struck out the first two batters he faced in the 10th, but Cozart reached him for his ninth homer to end the game.
