Palmer out for Steelers showdown

By Chick Ludwig

Staff Writer

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

CINCINNATI — Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer was ruled out of Sunday's home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, raising speculation that he could be shelved for a while because of his right elbow injury.

Head coach Marvin Lewis on Monday named Ryan Fitzpatrick the starter, meaning Palmer will miss his third game of the season as he gets another week to rest his elbow.

Palmer was examined by specialist Dr. David Altchek in New York, hoping the second opinion would allow him to practice and play. But that wasn't the case.

"Some further study and scans were done and what (Altchek) recommended is a further conservative approach right now," Lewis said, "which would put him out for this game and put Ryan as our starting quarterback as we get ready for the Steelers."

Upon further review

Lewis said he wanted to watch the tape of the 26-14 loss to the New York Jets before commenting on Fitzpatrick, who completed 20 of 33 passes for 152 yards. He was sacked five times and lost a fumble.

"I thought Ryan did some things a lot better than he did a couple weeks ago (against the Cleveland Browns)," Lewis said. "We still want to make sure that we're 100 percent taking care of the football."

Hall's mistake

One of the turning points in Sunday's loss came on the Jets' second drive. On third-and-goal from the Bengals' 19-yard line, cornerback Leon Hall got flagged for a 5-yard penalty (illegal contact), giving the Jets a first down.

Three plays later, Brett Favre threw a 2-yard TD pass to Thomas Jones, knotting the score at 7.

"Obviously, the penalty was unfortunate," Lewis said. "Leon didn't do anything out of the ordinary, but he fouled a guy at six yards (beyond the scrimmage line). It was a great jam, but his feet were at six yards. We've got to learn from it and make sure in those situations that we're set at four (yards) and jamming at five."

Graham's groin

Dave Rayner, who was signed on Saturday, handled the placekicking duties against the Jets.

He replaced Shayne Graham (right groin strain), who is due back against the Steelers.

"We had (Graham) kick for us on Saturday, and I thought he did a pretty good job," Lewis said. "But we decided to go ahead and sign Dave. That was a good thing because Shayne got a week off to rest. We'll evaluate him later in the week."
