South High School graduate Jerrid Gaines' dream of playing pro football is once again on hold.
The former Wildcats and Miami University cornerback was waived Monday by the Bengals, five weeks after signing a one-year college free-agent contract with the team.
"I was shocked when they called me today, and coach Coyle (Kevin, the Bengals' defensive backs coach) was shocked," said Gaines on Monday, July 7. "He kept telling me he thought I could help the team. He told me, 'I don't know what happened.'
"It could have been a numbers game," he continued. "I was added so late. I just don't know."
The Bengals were the second team to sign, then later release the 5-foot-9, 189-pound Gaines. That happened on May 29.
He was earlier signed by the Cleveland Browns, right after the NFL Draft concluded in April, then released after their rookie minicamp.
"Things can be going well and then you can get caught up in the numbers game, and if a guy has been there longer than you, they keep him because they have more in him," Gaines said. "I know I had the ability to play. I had some good practices with them, and I thought I did well while I was there."
Gaines played in 51 games as a four-year letterwinner at Miami. In 2007, he had 43 tackles and one interception.
He's not giving up on his pro football dream.
"I'm hoping somebody will call and give me a shot at (training) camp," said Gaines. "That's my goal, to go to camp with someone.
"I thought I had a chance with the Bengals until this," he continued. "After the first week, I caught on and everything was going smooth."
