WSU player takes a shot at Rowdy Raider
Friday, October 10, 2008
From the odds & ends zone:
• Can't decide if I want to high-five Wright State soccer player Carl Ebers or kick Rowdy Raider.
Seems Ebers landed a roundhouse on Rowdy's costumed beak following a loss to visiting Loyola last week. Rowdy's foul? The goofball held on to a wayward ball too long instead of heaving it back into play so WSU could quickly attack.
Athletic Director Bob Grant issued a declaration of student-athlete appreciation. President David Hopkins was close to the blast, but missed it.
Who among us hasn't wanted to deck an offending mascot? Or two?
• The IOC will retest every blood sample from the 2008 Summer Olympics athletes. The suits have developed a new procedure that detects a new blood-boosting wonder potion.
It's official: The drive to win gold has been bumped by the urgency to go undetected.
• So single wing football is all the NFL rage. The guess here is power-I, a full-house backfield and even the triple option can't be far behind.
No doubt those blasts from the past will be manned by flankers and wingbacks, and defended by monster backs and middle guards.
• That didn't take long. O.J. Mayo (Grizzlies) and Bill Walker (Celtics) already have been featured on NBA preseason ESPN highlights.
Seen a lot of boys hoops. Have never seen anything like the Mayo-Walker show that played out at Cincinnati North College Hill High School. Would like to have seen them against a Division I schedule, but no matter.
They had me after their first dunks.
