Preseason poll: WSU men picked to finish second in Horizon League

Staff reports

Tuesday, October 07, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS — The Wright State men's basketball team has been tabbed to finish second in the Horizon League this season, according to a poll released today, Oct. 7, by the league office.

The Raiders, 21-10 and 12-6 last season, return juniors Vaughn Duggins and Todd Brown. Duggins, a first-team Horizon League selection last year, averaged 13.8 points per game in 2007-08. Brown posted a 12.7 scoring average and made 42 percent of his 3-point attempts.

Other returning players who saw ample playing time last year: Will Graham, Gavin Horne, Ronnie Thomas, John David Gardner, N'Gai Evans, Cooper Land and Troy Tabler.

Promising newcomers include two redshirts — Scott Grote and Kyle Pressley — as well as junior-college standout Cory Cooperwood.

Wright State starts the season Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Nutter Center against Missouri Valley Conference foe Illinois State.

The preseason poll consists of votes by the head coaches, sports information directors and three media members from each school.

1. Cleveland State — 40 first place (478 total); 21-13, 12-6; NIT

2. Wright State—3 (412) 21-10, 12-6

3. UIC—2 (361) 18-15, 9-9

4. Green Bay (335) 15-15, 9-9

5. Butler—3 (326) 30-4, 16-2; NCAA

6. Milwaukee (216) 14-16, 9-9

7. Valparaiso (207) 22-14, 9-9; CBI

8. Loyola—1 (189) 12-19, 6-12

9. Detroit (98) 7-23, 3-15

10. Youngstown State (73) 9-21, 5-13

I think Wright State will dominate this league. Simply because we have talent and it is all young and played for two years. They have won 21 games and got a great head coach that I see making it big somewhere in the near future. Don’t underestimate Vaughn Duggins, the most under rated player in the country. He is very good and is a winner, he comes through in big games. WSU is just so solid, I think Cleveland State will have problems. Can we say WSU is the winningest team in Dayton? I think so.

Statement year for the Raiders! Look for them to win it all this year after not being selected to the NIT or CBI tournaments after a 21-win season last year!

Amelia's Bistro, Bellbrook, restaurant review [review]

Call it comfort food, gourmet style. From crab raviolis with vanilla lobster sauce, to a hand-cut and brined pork chop served with a fig jam, to a simply "Big-Ass Cake" that's a chocolate lover's dream, Amelia's has the potential to become a destination restaurant — worth the drive to Bellbrook.
