New billboards touting WSU achievements
Wednesday, September 24, 2008
Men's basketball may be the focus of Wright State's sports program, but new Athletic Director Bob Grant is looking to brand his school's name for several accomplishments.
That's why those five new green billboards with the wolf's head logo near the school are touting everything from team records to coaching honors to academic success.
The school is using the slogan, "Raiders Represent," to highlight:
1) 44 victories in the men's basketball program the past two seasons;
2) three Horizon League coach of the year awards (swimming's Sion Brinn and basketball coaches Brad Brownell and Bridgett Williams;
3) 36 victories in three years for the women's soccer team;
4) a 3.0 grade-point average for student-athletes for eight straight years.
Additional billboards and other public media are expected in the future.
Tennis coach hired
Sean McCaffrey has accepted the job as men's and women's tennis coach at Wright State after serving in the same position at Colby-Sawyer College — a Division III school — in New London, N.H.
McCaffrey, who has degrees from Johnson State in Johnson, Vt., and Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I., posted a 50-18 record in four-plus seasons (including this one) as the Colby-Sawyer women's coach and a 39-16 record in three years as the men's coach.
Previously, he was the boys tennis coach at Hanover (N.H.) High School, where his teams were 132-20 and won a Class I state championship in 2004.
McCaffrey, wife, Deborah, and daughters, Cora and Maddie, will soon move to the Dayton area.
