WITTENBERG NOTES
Wooster next up for Tigers
Thursday, February 14, 2008
SPRINGFIELD — Wittenberg has two days to put its 72-69 loss on Wednesday, Feb. 13 to Ohio Wesleyan behind it. There's no time to dwell on the defeat, just the second for the Tigers in the last 16 games, because Wittenberg plays Wooster on Saturday, Feb. 16.
If the Tigers beat the Scots, it would mean each team would be 12-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. If Wittenberg could then beat Wabash and Kenyon next week, it would tie Wooster for the NCAC regular-season title and get the No. 1 seed by having beaten Wooster twice.
Beating Wooster again, on the road this time, is no small task, especially considering the way the Tigers played Wednesday.
"You just have to let it go," Wittenberg coach Bill Brown said. "You have to examine yourself inside as to what you can do better in terms of being rested, being focused and being tough."
"We were riding a little wave of success lately," Wittenberg senior Brandon White said. "Human nature, you tend to get content with what's going on and just go with the flow. But we definitely need to refocus and be more aggressive."
Rudegeair dominant
Yellow Springs graduate Dustin Rudegeair led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting for Ohio Wesleyan.
"It's nice for him given the fact that he grew up in Yellow Springs," Wesleyan coach Mike DeWitt said. "He made the comment when he got in the locker room that it's nice to finally play well here."
Hill struggles
Gregg Hill, Wittenberg's leading scorer on the season, shot 3-of-15 from the field, including 1-of-9 in the second half.
"Greg, in particular, tried to do too much," Brown said. "He was probably overly concerned about contact when he drove the ball. At some point, you have to make some type of adjustment and look to finish short of the basket or look to pitch the ball. He just had a tough, tough night. He's had a lot of great nights for us."
