Wright gets an up-close view of LeBron's game
Thursday, August 28, 2008
DAYTON — Chris Wright didn't get off a dunk while being matched up against LeBron James in pickup games earlier this summer, and the University of Dayton sophomore leaper didn't surrender one, either.
But it wasn't lock-down defense that stopped their duel from becoming a jamfest.
"He didn't dunk on me, but he could have," Wright said. "I could've dunked on him, but he held me."
Wright and Flyer teammate Marcus Johnson — who hails from James' alma mater, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary — worked at the NBA superstar's basketball camp with Xavier's B.J. Raymond and other college standouts. And when the group split up to play 5-on-5, James usually joined them.
"He's so strong," Wright said. "And he just makes quick moves to the basket and gets right to the rim."
Wright was overmatched but wasn't disappointed with how he did — especially since he's been rehabbing a fractured right ankle since last season.
"My ankle is fine," he said. "I'm glad I took it slow. I can push off on my right foot and dunk with my left hand."
UD women's schedule
The UD women's basketball team will play in a pair of invitationals hosted by national powers this year, the school announced Wednesday, Aug. 27.
The Flyers, who set a program record with 25 wins last season, will face Texas in the Longhorns' World Vision Classic on Nov. 15. They also will play in Ohio State's tournament Nov. 29-30, squaring off against Central Michigan, and then playing either OSU or Boston University.
The Flyers' challenging nonleague schedule also includes road trips to Cincinnati, Penn State and Old Dominion.
Fans on film
The UD men's basketball team is making two commercials to promote the upcoming season, and the school wants the Flyer Faithful to be part of the cast.
The taping will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 18 at UD Arena, and fans are needed as extras to create a game-like atmosphere. Those who want to be involved in closeups can register in the arena concourse after the doors open at 6 p.m.
Refreshments will be served, and attendance is free. An autograph session with the Flyers will take place afterward.
Flyer notes
• Alex Torda, a junior from Dallas, was named to the watch list for the Hermann Trophy, which is the men's soccer version of the Heisman. Torda, a first-team All-Atlantic 10 pick last season, is the first UD player to make the watch list.
The men's soccer team is hosting the Marriott Invitational this weekend at Baujan Field. The Flyers will play Denver at 8 p.m. Friday and Wright State at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
• Junior Mandi Bäck was named the A-10 women's soccer player of the week for the second time in her career, and freshman Kelsey Miller was named the league's co-rookie of the week for their performances in a win over Indiana on Aug. 22.
• The men's and women's cross country teams will hold their lone home meet at Indian Ripple Park on Saturday. The men start at 10:45 a.m. and the women at 11:15.
