Connection to UD priority for Kissell

DAYTON — Ted Kissell doesn't know exactly what he'll be doing during his retirement years, but he does know where he'll be spending them.
With the last of their four children having left the nest, Kissell and his wife, Deanna, are selling their Oakwood home and are looking to downsize. Their plans, though, are to stay in the area.
"It's our home," the University of Dayton athletic director said. "We have a lot of friends here. ... We have two daughters in Chicago, so we want to stay nearby. I want to keep a connection with UD. It's been an important part of our lives, and we don't want to lose that."
Kissell, who turns 63 in October, announced last week that he'll end a 16-year stint as AD on Dec. 31. He'll remain a university vice president through June 30, 2009, and stay involved with the school in some capacity after that.
He'll leave behind a stable, broad-based program with vastly improved facilities. Dayton raised more than $30 million during his tenure for capital projects, including a renovation of UD Arena.
"People have no idea how you have to scratch and claw to get those things done," Xavier University Athletic Director Mike Bobinski said. "And to generate the resources in a private-school environment, it's person-to-person, hand-to-hand combat. It's not easy to do.
"I give him a lot of credit for getting done what he did. It's a great accomplishment."
