Week 8 high school football roundup

By Staff

The buzz around the Beavercreek High School football team is a strange one.

Coaches, players and fans are talking about Greater Western Ohio Conference Central Division championships, Division I state playoffs and the back-to-back winning seasons for first time in two decades.

A methodical 35-20 win over Springfield Friday put Creek in a position for success. That has not been the case for over two decades as the Beavers have had 19 losing seasons in the last 24 years. Creek (5-3) is now in a four-way tie for first in the GWOC Central with Wayne, Centerville and Northmont — all at 2-1.

Creek built up a 35-0 lead after three quarters in its usual grinding style. It ran the ball 70 times for 290 yards. Fullback Shaun Hill scored twice on short runs.

Springfield played the first half without six starters coach Eric Gillespie benched for disciplinary reasons.

The result was 13 yards total offense on 14 plays the first half. Quarterback Chris Wallace was 0-3 passing.

Wallace found his stride the second half completing 15 of 28 passes for 203 yards and three fourth quarter TDs.

Kenton Ridge 27, Stebbins 14: Running back Max Winnenberg set three school records as the Cougars (6-2, 2-1 Central Buckeye Conference) won at home. Winnenberg rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns and now holds school records for touchdowns in a season (19), touchdowns in a career (35) and yards in a season (1,474).

Shawnee 41, Bellefontaine 10: The Braves scored the first 27 points to pick up a home victory. Quarterback Tyler Bostick passed for 159 yards and rushed for 91 yards and a TD. Alex McCrory added 126 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Braves (5-3, 2-1 CBC).

Northeastern 29, Southeastern 19: Troy Clay had a 1-yard TD run and a 23-yard scoring catch from Cameron Hand as the Jets (3-5, 3-2 OHC) upset the host Trojans. P.J. Banion had a 53-yard TD run and a 3-yard scoring pass for Southeastern (5-3, 3-2 OHC).

West Liberty-Salem 42, Mechanicsburg 19: Quarterback Riley Simms threw for 226 yards and ran for 97 yards and three scores for the Tigers (8-0, 5-0 Ohio Heritage Conference). Brandon Purk had 132 yards receiving and two touchdown receptions for the host Indians (2-6, 1-4 OHC).

Triad 26, Cedarville 6: Trey McIntrye had an 11-yard scoring run and returned an interception 46 yards for a score for the Cardinals (7-1, 5-0 OHC).

Urbana 50, Northwestern 14: Tanner Lawrence ran for four touchdowns and Nathan Mays tossed two scoring passes for the Hillclimbers (7-1, 3-0 CBC).

Catholic Central 27, Greeneview 21, OT: Ryan Fain threw three TD passes including the game-winner to Dimitrious Dimitroff in overtime for the Irish (1-7, 1-4 OHC).
