GREENE COUNTY —

The driver of a car was killed and the passenger was taken to Miami Valley Hospital Friday afternoon after a bad crash on Interstate 71 in Greene County at the Fayette County line.

On Saturday the driver was identified as 20-year-old Shelby Smith of Taylorsville, Ky. The passenger was identified as Michaela Ray, 18, of Marietta, Ga.

Ray has since been discharged from Miami Valley, according to hospital staff.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. Friday. A preliminary report had stated a semi-tractor trailer had crashed into a car and drove over the top of the vehicle, killing Smith.

In a recent update, OSP said the car drove off the side of the freeway, over corrected and crashed with the semi. The semi driver was not injured in the crash.

All lanes of southbound I-71, approximately four miles south of the U.S. 35 interchange were closed while removing the vehicles and investigators are on scene. Traffic was re-routed to the northbound lanes to an alternative route. The backup is reported to extend approximately five miles from the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
