Local commemorations of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001:

The Centerville Noon Optimist Club has showcased its Avenue of Flags program for seven years in Centerville and Washington Twp. Avenue of Flags is a public service and fundraising project that places flags at the homes of those who sign up on five U.S. holidays. This year, the club will extend the flag days to include Sept. 11. Avenue of Flags costs $40 per year and proceeds support the Centerville Noon Optimist Club. Residents who want to participate can contact Tom Novak at (937) 885-2554 or tnovak23@yahoo.com.

The Community Blood Center will honor the memory of 9/11 victims with a limited edition 10th anniversary blood drive T-shirt “9.11 Remember.” The T-shirt is free to everyone who registers to donate through Sept. 17 at all local branches and most blood drives. For information, call (937) 461-3450.

The Fazl-i-Umar Mosque in Dayton and the Ahmadiyya Muslim community are sponsoring a monthlong blood drive as part of their nationwide campaign “Muslims for life” to honor the 9/11 victims. Since their mosque is undergoing construction, donors are asked to visit Community Blood Center, 349 S. Main St., Dayton.

Monday

The Kettering Moraine branch of the Dayton Metro Library, 3496 Far Hills Ave., will hold event “Search and Rescue at Ground Zero” at 6:30 p.m. honoring the local public safety personnel who participated in the rescue efforts in New York City. Dave Tritch, a retired Kettering firefighter, will recount his experiences with Ohio Task Force One at the World Trade Center site immediately following the attacks.

A panel of scholars will discuss the impact of the terrorist attacks at Wilmington College’s “9/11: 10 Years Later.” The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in Hugh G. Heiland Theatre. The event is a reprise of a presentation the college hosted a week after the 2001 attacks. History professor Vinton Prince will moderate a panel that includes Michael Snarr, professor of social and political studies, who recently returned from Afghanistan; Dean Minix, dean of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts at Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas; Lynn Rigsbee, associate professor of political science at Central State University and an expert in international relations and U.S. foreign policy in the Persian Gulf and Southeast Asia; and Carol Bargeron, associate professor of history at CSU who specializes in Islamic and modern Middle Eastern history.
