Putting the memorial back in Memorial Day
Here’s the history of the national holiday. It was first known as Decoration Day.

On Memorial Day, like thousands of people in southwest Ohio, Kettering resident Mary Ellen Hopkins will be placing flowers on the graves of family members who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The graves of two brothers and a family friend are among the ones at David’s Cemetery on Mad River Road in Kettering that Hopkins will be decorating.
