Great jazz and scintillating international flavors will shine across the Miami Valley as the 2012-13 seasons in jazz, world and folk music take shape.

Cityfolk, a longtime leader in eclectic programming, has another exciting lineup in store, which will be spread across multiple venues and feature some of the most promising names in music. Having launched its season this weekend with an appearance by the Canadian-bred Vishten, the organization will bring 28-year-old singer/songwriter Fatoumata Diawara to the University of Dayton on Thursday. An emerging figure in African music, Diawara weaves contemporary folk, jazz and blues with African sensibilities. Also, local favorites David Greer’s Classic Jazz Stompers will salute the New Orleans sounds of Louis Armstrong, King Oliver and more at Gilly’s with special guest cornetist Randy Reinhart. An evening of Cuban music at the University of Dayton will provide spicy flair thanks to saxophonist/flautist Jane Bunnett, pianist Hilario Duaran and percussionist Candido Camero. UD will also host jazz ensemble Hot Club of Detroit.

In addition, the Dayton debut of gifted19-year-old saxophonist/vocalist Grace Kelly will make for fine Valentine’s Day entertainment at Gilly’s. Irish troupe Dervish, specializing in traditional and contemporary tunes, will close the season at Stivers School for the Arts. Cityfolk will also hold frequent Contra Dance Parties and will particularly join forces with Wright State University on Saturday to present Playing for Change Day, an international music education project intended to tear down social barriers through the universality of music. Michael and Sandy Bashaw of Puzzle of Light will host and perform at the event to be held at Trolley Stop in the Oregon District. You can also catch Puzzle of Light in November as part of the Dayton Art Institute’s Vectren Jazz & Beyond Series.

Jazz lovers can anticipate solid offerings from mainstays Gilly’s and Jazz Central. This fall, Gilly’s will supply the Jazz Patrol, Signs of Life, Ellie Lee and Blues Fury, Bob Baldwin and White Rabbit. At Jazz Central, Kenny Baccus, Elizabeth Hayes and the Generations Big Band will be regulars, but the Ron Jones Quartet will be spotlighted Saturday and clarinetist Ronald Hartwell will perform a Benny Goodman tribute in October.

Elsewhere, Spinoza’s inside the Mall at Fairfield Commons continues a varied lineup, particularly featuring Dustin Vincent and Jayson Kinsey (acoustic guitar and percussion), Del Boca Vista (acoustic guitar and rock/folk vocals), Mike Teckenbrock Trio (jazz), Brown Street Breakdown (blues) and Jim Volk (ecstatic guitar and vocals) for the remainder of September. As always, expect collegiate ensembles to deliver the goods throughout the season at Sinclair Community College, the University of Dayton and Wright State University.
