DAYTON — When you’ve written, directed and performed in as many plays and movies as he has, pretty much every week is Tyler Perry Week somewhere.
It’s definitely Tyler Perry Week in Dayton.
His new movie, “Why Did I Get Married Too?” opens here and everywhere else Friday, April 2.
His new play, “Madea’s Big Happy Family,” launches Tuesday, April 6, at Wright State University’s Nutter Center before moving on to Cincinnati, Louisville and Atlanta.
As usual in the plays and movies containing Madea, this one’s expected to star the 6-foot-5 entrepreneur of the stage and screen, who continues moving up the top 10 of top earners in the entertainment industry.
Madea, as if you didn’t know and if you didn’t know, don’t admit it around “her,” is his big bad matriarchal character, Mabel “Madea” Simmons, a stern, no-nonsense granny. It’s been five years since Perry has played her live.
He told one interviewer he “needed to get away from Hollywood” for a while. So, it’s back on the road in another variation on a show his loyal audience needs no prodding to attend.
Perry, who made a cameo appearance in the 2009 “Star Trek” film as Admiral Barnett, is showing signs of turning a bit more serious.
In June, he will begin shooting his new screen adaptation of the famed Ntozake Shange feminist stage play “For colored girls who have considered suicide, when the rainbow is enuf.” His all-star cast is expected to include Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Mariah Carey, Phylicia Rashad, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine and singer Macy Gray.
Jackson is also reprising her role in the film sequel “Why Did I Get Married Too?”
Singer Jill Scott, also in that cast, recently decided against tying the knot with drummer Lil John Roberts. They have a son, Jett, and were engaged to be married, but Scott has called it off.
