1) Knockout Dayton
Boxing has a long history in Dayton. In the first half of the 20th century, venues such as Memorial Hall, Westwood Field and Triangle Park hosted more than 30 champions or soon-to-be champions. However, there hadn’t been boxing at Memorial Hall, 125 E. Third St., since the 1940s, until last year when John Drake of Drake’s Gym, Jennifer Dean from Dayton History and some other local fight enthusiasts organized the first KnockOut Dayton.
The second annual V.I.P. Fight Night returns to Memorial Hall at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 2, with 18 local luminaries facing off in an evening of exhibition boxing for charity. This year’s fighters include Jen Cadieux from Downtown Dayton Partnership, who will be fighting Annie Bowers, a graphic designer and the owner of The Envelope: A Paper and Design Studio. Keith Lambert, a media graphic specialist for Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley will face off in the ring against his friend Phil Roestamajki, who is a technical marketing specialist at Workflow One.
Doors open Saturday at 6 p.m. Cost: $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Proceeds benefit Dayton History. Call (937) 293-2841 or go online to www.knockoutdayton.com.
2) ‘The Cline Show’
Painting, photography, sculpture and video are just some of the media on display in “The Cline Show” at the Dayton Visual Arts Center, 118 N. Jefferson St. This annual juried exhibition, which opens Friday, March 1, showcases college and university art and design students from around the region. DVAC is hosting an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 1, and a Gallery Talk at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, March 14. “The Cline Show” runs through March 23. Cost: free. Call (937) 224-3822 or go online to www.daytonvisualarts.org.
3) Audra McDonald
The name Audra McDonald means different things to different people. Some folks are fans of her four critically acclaimed solo albums for Nonesuch Records or her memorable Broadway runs in “Porgy and Bess” and “Ragtime.” Others know McDonald as Dr. Naomi Bennett on the ABC medical drama “Private Practice.” The Tony and Grammy winner will be focusing on her musical side when she kicks of the Schuster Center’s year-long 10th anniversary celebration in the Schuster, Second and Main streets, Dayton, at 8 p.m. Friday, March 1. Cost: $40-$90. Call (937) 228-3630 or go online to www.ticketcenterstage.com.
4) AleFeast
While many beer tastings are focused solely on offering a wide liquid menu, local beer aficionado Joe Waizmann had something different in mind with AleFeast, a spinoff of his popular Alefest event. The fifth annual AleFeast returns to the Dayton Masonic Center, 525 W. Riverview Ave., Dayton, from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 2. That day local restaurants and food purveyors as diverse as Dorothy Lane Market, Jay’s Seafood, Thai 9, Dayton Nut Company and South Park Tavern will pare special dishes with select craft beers. Cost: $50 advance, $55 at door. Ages 21 and older. Go online to www.alefest.com.
5) “Thoroughly Modern Millie”
Take a musical journey back to 1922 with the sensation of flappers, the thrill of a budding mystery and the bliss of falling in love when Dayton Playhouse, 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave., presents “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” The show opens Friday, March 1, and runs through Sunday, March 17. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. Cost: $17 adults, $15 seniors and students. Call (937) 424-8477 or go online to www.daytonplayhouse.org.
6) Weekend in Jazz
Jazz ambassador Ramsey Lewis, a big name in the genre for nearly 50 years, will play a concert with his Electric Band on Saturday night to cap off the Beavercreek Weekend of Jazz. The show is at 8 p.m. at Beavercreek High School’s Alumni Auditorium, 2660 Dayton-Xenia Road. Admission: $30 for adults, $20 for students (with ID) and seniors 62 and older. The Weekend in Jazz events began on Thursday, Feb. 28. Call (937) 490-9010 or go online to weekendofjazz.org.
7) Christopher Titus
Christopher Titus has co-starred in a short-lived television drama and starred in his own sitcom, but stand-up comedy is still the best forum for the outspoken California native. The actor-comedian’s fifth special “The Voice in My Head” premieres on Comedy Central on April 1. In the meantime, he is taking his act back to the road. Titus returns to The Funny Bone Comedy Club, 88 Plum St., The Greene, Beavercreek, Friday through Sunday, March 1-3. Show times are 7:30 and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Cost: $25-$55. Call (937) 429-LAFF (5233) or go online to www.daytonfunnybone.com.
8) “The Addams Family”
It promises to be an evening of harmless, horror-themed entertainment when Victoria Theatre Association’s Premier Health Broadway Series presents “The Addams Family.” Gomez, Morticia and the entire oddball, haunted-house-dwelling clan first introduced in the 1960s television series is brought to life in this comedy musical at The Schuster Center on Tuesday through next Sunday, March 5-10. Show times are 8 p.m. Tuesday through next Saturday, 7:30 p.m. next Sunday, with 2 p.m. matinees on that Saturday and on Sunday. Cost: $40-$92 weeknights, $47-$95 weekends. Call (937) 228-3630 or go online to www.ticketcenterstage.com.
9) Seventies Reloaded
Not even two months after his successful third annual Dayton Does Dayton music festival at Canal Street Tavern, 308 E. First St., Louie Wood Jr. of Midwest Promo and Concert Booking returns to the club for another tribute show. This one, on Friday, March 1, finds local musicians paying homage to some of their bands of yore by tackling covers of songs from the 1970s. The High Notes will open the night at 8:30 p.m. and final act Shotgun Surprise will be taking the stage sometime after midnight. Other acts on the eight-band bill include Paradigm Shift, Gild the Lily and William the Accountant. Cost: $5. Call (937) 461-9343 or go online to www.canalstreettavern.com.
10) Author visits
Books & Co. at The Greene, 4453 Walnut St., Beavercreek, has a number of author visits each month, which puts fans in close proximity to their favorite writers to gain further insight into their work. Next week features two different writers. Mindee Arnett, the author of the young-adult novel “The Nightmare Affair,” discusses her book and signs autographs at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 5. Michael Buckley, the author of tween novels “N.E.R.D.S” and “The Sisters Grimm,” discusses his work at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7. Cost: free. Call (937) 429-2169 or go online to www.booksandco.com.
