1) SUNWATCH PRESENTATION SERIES
Alien influence, the Trojan War and human sacrifice are just a few of the juicy topics on tap when SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park, 2301 W. River Road, Dayton, presents the 2013 AiA/SunWatch Presentation Series. The monthly series opens with “The Ancient Aliens Fantasy: Amorous Astronauts, Inkblots and a Low Opinion of our Ancestors” by Ken Feder at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19. The professor of anthropology at Central Connecticut State University presents a look at why some people believe ancient aliens had a role in shaping human history.
Other programs in the series include “The Newark ‘Holy Stones’: Science, Politics and Religion in 19th Century Ohio” by Brad Lepper on Feb. 19, “Assessing the Historicity of the Trojan War: Excavations of Troy 1988-2010” by C. Brian Rose on March 2 and “Sacred Space Lines and Human Sacrifice: The Nasca Lines in Their Cultural and Religious Context” by Christina Conlee on April 20.

If you’re in the market for a recreational vehicle, the Cincinnati-Dayton RV Show is a good place to get an up-close look at the latest models on the market today. The 46th annual event is back at the Dayton Expo Center, 3900 McCauley Ave., Vandalia, to give potential road warriors an opportunity to kick the tires, inspect the interior and get a peek under the hood. On Tuesday, rising country superstar Easton Corbin released his new single, “All Over the Road,” the follow-up to his top 5 single “Lovin’ You Is Fun” from mid-2012. Since it began 1979, the Original Toughman Contest has given the common man, and woman, a chance to step into the ring for three-round, single elimination bouts. The event has seen its share of ups and downs in that time, including a change in promoters in 2001, but Toughman is now back under the guidance of veteran promoter Jim Morris, who hopes to return the event to quality and consistency it had in the ’80s and ’90s. 5) EARLY LOOK AT RESTAURANT WEEK
Winter Restaurant Week officially kicks off on Sunday, Jan. 27, but like every year at this time The Miami Valley Restaurant Association will attempt to get the mouths of local foodies watering at the prospect of what the region has to offer during a Sneak Peek to the biannual event. The preview — at Watson’s, 2590 E. Whipp Road in Centerville on Wednesday, Jan. 23 — features participating restaurants such as Amelia’s, Christopher’s, Coco’s Bistro, Jay’s and Pour Haus. 6) DOORS SYMPHONIC EXPERIENCE
It has been more than 40 years since music legend Jim Morrison died but the songs of his psychedelic rock band The Doors live on. The California band’s music has appeared in commercials, movies and television programs. It has been interpreted by fledgling garage rock groups, talented marching bands and respected orchestras. Morrison and company receive another classical update when The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra’s Rockin’ Orchestra Series presents special guests Windborne Music and “The Doors Symphonic Experience” at The Schuster Center, Dayton, at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19. Some of Dayton’s best comedians have gathered together to be a force for good by donating their time and talent to benefit Children’s Organ Transplant Association. 8) SHOP TIL YOU DROP
Christmas is only a month in our rearview mirror, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of folks out there already itching to get out and look for deals.
