Ragin’ Cajun: John Morgan’s everyman brand of humor

His special delivery elevates the material

By Donald Thrasher

Contributing Writer

John Morgan, aka The Ragin’ Cajun, has been a professional comedian for more than two decades. He still tours about 40 weeks a year, but at his core the Louisiana native is a devoted husband and father, a motivational speaker and savvy owner and operator of more than a dozen rental properties.

These real-life concerns ground Morgan’s material, which is instantly relatable to the working-class comedy fans comprising a huge percentage of Midwestern audiences. The 48-year-old stand-up, performing at the Funny Bone Comedy Club in Beavercreek through Sunday, took a few minutes to discuss his everyman brand of humor.

The new normal

“The normality is no different in life than any patron that walks through the door to watch me do comedy,” Morgan said. “Therefore when I speak about the things I speak about, people are able to go, ‘I’m just like him. I know exactly what he’s thinking about.’ ”

It’s in the delivery

“They’re not coming back because I’m some clever comic or had the most perfect line,” Morgan said. “I’ll be the first to tell you I’m not the greatest writer in the world, but you’re not going to perform it like I do. You’re just not going to sell it like me.

“You can give me a pile of crap on a paper plate and I’ll tell you it’s French cuisine and give you a layout to where you can’t wait to dip the first cracker in and eat it,” he said. “But it’s only because I’m going to describe it just as I would in a normal conversation.”

Speaking his mind

“OK, so I’ve got some strong opinions about some things, and we might disagree,” Morgan said. “Even the ones that like me may go, ‘Damn, he took that far.’ Then again, it gives me that edge that deletes me from being normal in the other senses.”
