A comedian without a point of view is like a singer with no sense of pitch. Of course, confidently stating his opinions has never been a problem for Auggie Smith.

The topical comic, performing at Wiley’s Comedy Niteclub in Dayton on Friday and Saturday, recently shared a few thoughts from his Los Angeles home.

Nothing is private

“It’s amazing. Apparently everything that everybody says is interesting now. That wasn’t always the case, but now it definitely is. Every thought that comes into your head needs to be heard by everyone in the universe. The problem is people are growing less and less interesting and seem to have less to say, yet they have more and more ways to make their disinteresting thoughts known by the masses.”

Fear of machines

“I come from a generation where we fear the machines. I don’t want the machines to know everything about me. I don’t want them to have this knowledge and be able to track me, but there’s a whole different generation that’s fine with the machines. We have a president that gives robot drones guns and bombs and sends them overseas to kill people. Good God man, has Jean-Claude Van Damme taught us nothing? If you arm the robots, it always comes back to kill you.”

Election coverage

“Political partisanship has become entertainment for people. The only way you can make things like whether or not health insurance should cover contraception entertaining is to blow them way out of proportion.”

Share the love

“Last time I was at Wiley’s this couple came up to me and said, ‘Yeah, we’ve been married for seven years, and you were our first date.’ Tell the young lovers out there to come out because an Auggie Smith show pretty much guarantees lifelong love.”
