ROCK INSIDER
By Donald Thrasher
Dan Raridan was faced with a quandary this summer. It was fast approaching two years since his band The Calientes released its debut album, “Bus,” and Raridan didn’t want 2012 to end without a new record.
The biggest hurdle was his bandmates, Alessandro Cortez (bass) and Larry Smith (drums), who were unable to participate in the recording sessions because of scheduling conflicts. Raridan ended up playing all of the parts himself on guitar, keyboards, bass and drums, but “Give It Up” never sounds pieced together.
The Dayton native sat down at Tank’s recently to discuss the evolution his excellent new album.
Crunch time
“I’ve been telling the guys we had to record since February. I had tunes I wanted to do. Even up until four months ago they were telling me they wanted to do it. I was like, ‘OK, let’s record. Here’s the time,’ but it didn’t happen. We had this little window of time where I hoped they could do it but they just weren’t there so I went ahead and did it myself, which is not what I wanted.”
Capturing the period
“I’ve been playing a long time, so I hammered it out in about a month. I feel like albums are a record of a time period. I was like, ‘I’ve got these tunes. They’ve got to come out now.’ I hate to tell people I did everything myself because it takes away from the whole live-band vibe. I wish they were on the record. We’ve played these songs live, and they’ve already made them 100 percent better.”
A time for layers
“I play Canal Street all the time with the folk guys and it’s all stripped down, and you can hear the songs that way when I play solo, but when I’m recording I always like to do overdubs like adding a second vocal or singing harmony with myself. I like playing bass and drums and I soak up other musicians I play with. The last album has keyboards, too, but there was a little more freedom this time.”
Back in form
“I kind of depend on those guys now. I thought it was over, and the band was done. I got really depressed, and then we got asked to do a few shows recently, and they were both right there and it was great. Those guys are so good. They’re just on it.”
