Never say die: Guitarist refuses to let Signum A.D. fold

We talk with the band founder about his decision

There’s a time to pull the plug, and there’s a time to regroup and return to the road. Kansas-based guitarist Elliott Ecton took the latter option last year when his bandmates all departed and left him in sole control of the future of Signum A.D.

Ecton recently discussed his decision assemble a new lineup and keep Signum A.D. moving forward. The hard-rock band, on tour supporting its new EP, “Veto the Vultures Vol. 1,” performs at McGuffy’s House of Rock in Dayton on Friday.

Q: Why was it important to you to keep the Signum A.D. name alive rather than form a new band?

A: “There was so much invested in the name: time, money, blood, sweat and tears and hours in the van. It was just impossible to let go. I couldn’t do it.”

Q: How long of a process was it to get the new lineup together?

A: “It wasn’t too bad, actually. The old lineup left in the middle of July last year, and we had the whole band locked down by Easter weekend this year. It’s going really well. We’ve only got 10 shows under our belt with this new lineup, but it’s going really well.”

Q: Why did you decide to get in and record before taking the new lineup on the road?

A: “Yeah, it’s crazy. When we went into the studio in Memphis in May it was only the second time the whole band had been together. We didn’t have any songs completely mapped out. We’d been sending songs back and forth and working on stuff on ProTools, but that was only the second time we had actual face time together. We did five songs, and one of them was prepared well before the new lineup came on. The rest of the songs we put together in the time we had.”

Q: Why was it important for you to get in the studio and get the ball rolling so quickly?

A: “Well, out of sight, out of mind. We wanted to get back out there and show what the new lineup was like. That’s why we did an EP instead of a full album. We wanted to get new music out for the fans and an EP just made more sense for us, especially since we only had basically one month to prepare for the studio. I think the day of the full album is almost dead anyway, with iTunes and instant gratification. Everybody wants something new now.”
