Fraze Pavilion in Kettering is known for programming a diverse season of music each summer, from classic acts to contemporary performers presenting rock, jazz, folk, dance music and more. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the Fraze is opening its stage to another beloved American music genre with Good Time Gospel Night featuring performances by The Hoskins Family and The Penny Loafers.
Here’s a brief rundown on what each act has to offer.
The Hoskins Family
Genre: Christian, country, gospel
Location: Waynesville
Members: Angie Hoskins-Aldridge, Reva Hoskins, Rick Hoskins and the Rev. Rick Smith
Building a buzz: The Hoskins Family recorded and performed in the 1990s and most of the following decade with great success on the gospel music charts. The group’s first Top 40 gospel single, “Mission of Love,” opened the door to a string of singles, each one topping the last. The follow-up single, “Help Me Stand,” reached the top 20. The turning point for the group was the next big single “Joyful Morning,” which cracked the top 5.
Back in form: The family act stepped away from the music industry for a few years at the end of the 2000s. However, The Hoskins revived their musical ministry earlier this year and returned to the road.
Old is new: This spring the group issued the single “You Keep Loving Me,” which was originally released on the family’s 2005 LP, “It’s Over, Let Eternity Begin.”
The Penny Loafers
Genre: Christian a cappella
Location: Berea, Ky.
Members: Alan Pike, Larry Nichols, Kevin Slemp and Michael Hunt
The early days: This vocal ensemble’s roots date back to 1985 when the founding members worked up an arrangement of “Happy Trails” at Berea College. The Penny Loafers existed as hobby for a rotating cast of singers until autumn 1991 when the group members made a decision to pursue music full time.
Keep it clean: Family friendly entertainment is the order of the day when this crew takes the stage with a set ranging from classic doo-wop from the 1950s to contemporary gospel. This approach makes The Penny Loafers a big draw for public concerts and church functions as well as for art series performances, youth events and corporate banquets.
Select performances: Although The Penny Loafers no longer tour full time, the active singers still perform regularly, traveling to special events throughout the country.
