Contributing Writer
Show business has consumed Micky Dolenz’s life. The 67-year-old performer had his first feature film screen test when he was 6 and starred in his first television series, “Circus Boy,” four years later. However, it was his role in the 1960s television series “The Monkees” that secured his place in history.
Dolenz — performing with the Happy Together Tour at Fraze Pavilion on Thursday — recently answered some questions from his California home.
Q What appealed to you about coming back and doing the Happy Together Tour with The Turtles, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, The Grass Roots and The Buckinghams for a second time?
A “Mainly the producer, the tour people and the acts involved. All these guys are old friends. They’re great people to travel with and 95 percent of the time we’re not actually singing, we’re traveling. They pay me to travel, I sing for free, but when you have people that are fun and easy to be around and hang with, it makes the traveling part much, much easier.”
Q How does this year compare to the previous tour?
A “I haven’t really looked at the numbers very carefully, but I think it’s been very successful. I think this tour is doing very, very well. We’re playing a packed venue virtually all the time.”
Q Why do you think The Monkees’ hits from the 1960s remain so popular?
A “It starts with the writing. That holds true in all the entertainment business, including movies, TV and books, obviously. You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. In the case of The Monkees, of course, I was blessed … to have some of the greatest writers ever writing for me. You get certain material and certain people together, and then the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. If that happens, you’ve lucked out.”
Q What can you tell us about your upcoming solo album, “Remember,” which will be released Sept. 25?
A “I’m very proud of it. It’s a musical scrapbook I guess you’d call it, featuring songs for one reason or another that had an impact on my life.”
Q You’ve done a lot in your career, from touring and television to live theater and radio. What area would you like to pursue further?
A “I’d say right now I’m quite keen on doing musical theater. I’ve always been a fan, but I came to it rather late in life and really fell in love with it.”
