Local indie rock act Motel Beds is at the top of its game and the listeners are reaping the benefits.

The band functioned in a half-serious haze for a number of years, recording a seemingly endless stream of memorable pop rock nuggets for a growing cadre of adoring fans. Somewhere around 2009, things changed for Motel Beds. The members became more focused, the live show grew by leaps and bounds and the fan base grew in kind. Today, few bands in town can match complete ease in the studio coupled with an equally powerful rock show, which has become the group’s stock in trade.

“Motel Beds, oh my God, they are so good,” said Robthebank guitarist Nate Farley, formerly of Guided By Voices and The Breeders. “I love watching those guys and I love booking shows with them because it’s always a fun time.”

On a recent Tuesday night in mid-October, P.J. Paslosky (vocals) Tommy Cooper (guitar), Darryl Robbins (guitar), Tod Weidner (bass) and Ian Kaplan (drums) sat down in the control room of their practice space/recording studio on the outskirts of downtown Dayton.

On break from rehearsing for a (then) upcoming Friday night gig at the CMJ Music Festival in New York, the musicians discussed Motel Bed’s latest album, “Dumb Gold.” The stunning follow-up to last year’s full-length, “Tango Boys,” will be released by Chapel Hill, N.C.-based No More Fake Labels on Tuesday, Nov. 13.

Here’s a distilled version of the conversation, minus the frequent inside jokes and conversational tangents.

Weidner: “I listened to ‘Tango Boys’ recently. That was my first record with the band and I still think it’s a good record but ‘Dumb Gold’ is so much better.”

Cooper: “We’ve been playing the new songs live and they’ve been going over really well. We’ve played around town a lot lately but we’re hoping to focus more on getting out of town.”

Robbins: “It’s nice because we’re actually taking a break from writing new material. Usually we finish a record and immediately start working on the follow up. Right now, we’re just taking our time.”

Weidner: “We’ll write new material when the time is right and we feel like writing again. Right now we’re just focusing on the live show and polishing that up.”

Paslosky: “Since we have a new album out we thought it would be a good idea to focus on the new songs and supporting them with some live shows. That’s something we’ve never really done before. Novel idea, right?”
