Biogenesis has faced extreme highs and crushing lows since forming in Dayton in 1999.

The local heavy metal band, performing at Hank’s Pub in Kettering on Saturday, Feb. 9, signed a deal with Row Productions in Australia in 2000 and released its debut album, “The Mark Bleeds Through,” the following year.

Despite a growing international buzz and tours with bands like Mortification, personnel problems completely derailed the second Biogenesis album. The group dissolved in 2005, but it’s hard to keep dedicated musicians down long.

Biogenesis reformed in 2009 and finally released its sophomore album, “The Rise The Fall The Rebirth,” on another Australian label, Soundmass, in 2012. Today, the group features longtime members Chaz Bond (vocals) and Randy Walton (bass) alongside hotshot recruit Nevin Cline (drums).

Darin Moore (guitar), who joined in late 2012, recently discussed his involvement with Biogenesis.

Q: What was your history with Biogenesis prior to joining the band?

A: “They got their start in the late ’90s when I was playing with Legacy. We played right behind them all the time at old venues like Dr. Dave’s Avenue Lounge and Twister’s. It’s kind of ironic I ended up joining them later.”

Q: Did you know them well?

A: “No, I didn’t meet Chaz until 2005 after Biogenesis had broken up. That’s when we formed Human Paradox together. I’m really a big fan of his. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to continue working with him in Biogenesis. He’s got a great vocal range. He can do the melodic vocals but he’s got a great ability to do some of the heavier-style vocals. Not a lot of vocalists have that broad of a range.”

Q: How did you come to join the band?

A: “The guitar slot came open and I was asked to join since I had worked with Chaz in the past. Human Paradox had a revolving door of bass players so it’s been nice to get something more stable and let people know we’re all out as a cohesive unit.”

Q: What’s next for Biogenesis?

A: “A new album. We’re already working on stuff. That’s another sign the band wants to move forward quickly. We’ve probably got half the new album wrote already and we’re actually playing some of those songs out already. I think I speak on behalf of everybody in the band when I say we definitely don’t want to take another 10 years plus to release another album. Hopefully we’ll be able to get something out within the next year.”
