Local label modeled on Motown

By Don Thrasher

While The Termites focus mostly on music of the past, band member Terry O’Brien also looks to the future by promoting new music by rising young artists through his own recording studio and nonprofit label Trilevel Records.

“I started Trilevel about four years ago, because I’m a songwriter and needed a way to get songs completed to be heard,” O’Brien said. “The old-fashioned way of sending songs to publishers is not working anymore. I invested heavy into more modern recording equipment and software and completely overhauled my work studio to be a much more open, software-driven space.

O’Brien based his approach on the old Berry Gordy model with Motown Records.

“Writing is done in-house with help from the artist,” O’Brien said. “Recording is done in my studio at no cost to the artist. For producing, we work together to find the right approach to each song. For promotion, we’re using iTunes, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Jango Radio and any other free media to get the songs and artist some visibility.”

The latest Trilevel release is Jess Gallo’s song “# Hashtag.”

“We release a new song about every two weeks and start all over again,” O’Brien said. “I do this as a passion, a hobby. Some guys golf, I write and produce music. I always tell the people that decide to work with me that I’m not the guy who will make you famous. I’m the guy who will help you get ready for the person who will make you famous.”
