February is Black History Month, and there are many exhibits that honor black heroes at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

A self-guided tour is always a great plus when you are visiting museums with children. Parents can walk at a slower pace (or faster, depending upon the child and the age) and spend more time at the exhibits of your choice.

Here’s a quick summary of some the exhibits.

Early Years Gallery: First black pilot

First black pilot: Interested in having your children learn about the only black military pilot in WWI? Almost 100 years ago, Eugene Jacques Bullard was an American volunteer in the French army. He won medals, pins and accolades as the first black military pilot in history.

Tuskegee Airmen: These black fliers earned their wings in the U.S. Army Air Forces during WWII. The Tuskegee Airmen flew, commanded and supported combat units, directly contributing to the eventual integration of the U.S. armed services.

Engineer Aviation Battalions: Skilled engineers and construction workers formed significant support units during WWII. These self-contained teams became the core of engineering efforts during the war.

Integration of the Air Force: The command came down in April of 1948 from Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Carl Spaatz: the Air Force would desegregate to improve combat effectiveness. From that point on, men and women were assigned according to ability, not race.

Additionally, podcasts can be downloaded at the Black Wings Teacher Resource Guide, which include audiovisual items to borrow and suggested readings. A lesson plan on Tuskegee Airmen for grades 2-4 can be downloaded at the museum site.
