Ever find yourself in the mood for some Christmas music but can’t listen to “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” one more time? We’re here to help invigorate your holiday playlist with some uncommon suggestions from a few local music fanatics.

Juliet Fromholt, host of “Kaleidoscope” on WYSO-FM (91.3)

“The Christmas Song” by The Raveonettes (2004)

“This song was featured on the ‘Maybe This Christmas Tree’ compilation, one of several albums that served as a welcome relief to the typical holiday fare back when I worked at a record store. It’s one I still like to dust off for Kaleidoscope’s yearly holiday show. I tend to like holiday songs that transport you someplace else, away from all of requisite shopping and wrapping, and this song definitely does that. Close your eyes and just for a moment you’re at a swanky 1960s holiday party.”

Ruckus Roboticus, electronic music DJ

“Zat You, Santa Claus? (The Heavy Remix)” by Louis Armstrong (2008)

“When compared to classics like ‘Jingle Bells,’ ‘Zat You, Santa Claus?’ seems like an obscure, underground holiday song. But when you listen to this funky remix of a classic jazz song it seems so familiar, as if it’s been a holiday classic all along. It’s a breath of fresh air in any Christmas playlist, yet it still fits in with the other ‘Greatest Hits’ of the season. Plus, the song is just straight up awesome. Who can resist Louis Armstrong’s charming, one-of-a-kind vocals? It brings a smile to my face every time. Then, when you add The Heavy on remix duties, they add a subtle funky, edgy twist to the song, which is so irresistible and so ‘Ruckus Roboticus!’ I love it!”

J. Todd Anderson, filmmaker, creator of “Nativity the Pop Opera”

“We Are Three Wise-men” by the cast of “Nativity the Pop Opera” (2011)

“I chose this tune because it was the first song I wrote for what would become ‘Nativity the Pop Opera.’ The song always had magic and it is very danceable! I’m a lazy songwriter so it wasn’t completed until much later when the show was written on a deadline in the late ’90s. I can’t remember what inspired it, it was just a happy accident I guess. It has always been fun. Folks still get a big kick out of it, and ‘We Are Three Wise-men’ has never let me down.”

Art “Dr. J” Jipson, University of Dayton professor, co-host of Flyer Radio’s “Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative”

“Santa Claus Go Straight to the Ghetto” by James Brown (1968)

“This song takes Brown’s amazing voice and wraps it around a powerful holiday appeal to take care of all members of our community. Who can resist the plea that Brown makes for thinking about all the children: ‘Santa Claus, go straight to the ghetto. Fill every stocking you find, the kids are gonna love you so.’ This soulful holiday song is perfect. The swing of the guitar, bass and horns makes this song one of the most danceable Christmas songs ever written. In the late 1960s, James Brown was one of the most recognizable voices in music and this song takes his vision to holiday tunes. Overall, the music, lyrics and festive interpretation of jolly ol’ Saint Nick will keep your toes tapping and place a smile on your face all day long.”
