Experimental rock music doesn’t appeal to all listeners, but it’s a risk former Daytonian Matt Schultz (drums, piano) of Aperiodic is willing to take.

“Sometimes improvised music just doesn’t happen,” Schultz said recently, talking from his home in Brooklyn, N.Y. “But in the moments it does and everybody’s playing together, it’s the best thing in the world.”

His improvisational trio, which includes Kevin Parrett (guitar) and Ben Perkins (bass), performs at Blind Bob’s in Dayton on Friday, March 1. This will be the group’s second local show since forming in Dayton in 1997.

“It’s really strange,” Schultz said. “We’ve all played in different bands, but people putting on shows in Dayton back then just wouldn’t book us. It’s funny, but we only played in Cincinnati. We played five or six shows, and then we went our separate ways.”

Perkins moved to Chicago in 1998. Schultz moved east in 2001, where he played in Enon and other bands. Parrett remained in Dayton, where he enrolled in college and played in several other short-lived bands. Aperiodic was essentially done, but that changed when the group was invited to perform in New York in 2009.

“We didn’t do anything for over a decade,” Schultz said. “Then a friend of mine who plays experimental music and has the label Generate Records asked if we wanted to play a 10-year anniversary show on Roosevelt Island. Nobody would get paid, but he was releasing seven-inches (vinyl records) for each of the groups that played.”

Despite living in three different states, the show and the promise of a vinyl release sparked the three friends to revisit Aperiodic. They recorded songs for the release by sharing tracks through the e-mail.

“All we had before was a cassette, and this way we’d have a record,” Schultz said. “We literally hadn’t been in the same room in 11 years, and we did the show and got our record. A month later we got together and recorded a full-length record.”

Aperiodic’s adventurous debut LP, “Future Feedback,” was released in October by Cincinnati-based Phratry Records.

“It took a couple of years for it to come out,” Schultz said. “We’ve been playing some shows here and there, and we’re finally returning to Dayton. We’re having a lot of fun. I don’t want there to be any pressure on it. I’m sick of that. The thing I like about Aperiodic is there are no expectations from anybody.

“This is so fun for me because it’s purely music,” he added. “There’s no pretense. We just get together and play.”
