Band name: Drastic Measures.

Home base: Bellbrook.

Formed: December 2010.

Musical style: Eclectic mix of blues and rock.

First show: Sugar Maple Festival in Bellbrook in April 2011.

Upcoming shows: Talegators in Centerville on Friday, Feb. 15, Rumbleseat Wine in Centerville on March 2 and the Sugar Maple Festival on April 20.

Origin story: Steve Kelch (drums) and Jim Murphy (guitar, bass) had played together in numerous cover bands since the 1980s and wanted to expand. They reached out to Tony Peters (bass, guitar), who had been a radio DJ for many years, but was never in a serious band.

Expanding repertoire: “Jim and I were playing in an acoustic trio, and we wanted to upgrade to more of a power trio with electric,” Kelch said. “We talked about who was available and thought about Tony, who has a vast knowledge of music. Jim and I were playing a lot of blues, but Jim was also playing a lot of Kinks, Steppenwolf and Neil Young. Tony brought in a lot of different stuff like R.E.M. and Moody Blues.”

Signature songs: “Tore Down” by Freddie King, or “It Don’t Come Easy” by Ringo Starr.

Maximizing resources: “We just try to get the best out of everybody and whatever combination sounds the best for that song,” Murphy said. “You can look out at the crowd and if they’re tapping their toes, singing along and having a good time, you know you’re doing something right.”

Band motto: We can do a lot with just three guys.

Distinguishing characteristics: “We switch instruments during the show,” Peters said. “The bassist plays guitar, and vice versa. Plus we all sing lead vocals.”

V is for variety: “Our shows are filled with variety,” Murphy said. “We don’t stick on one style all night long. All three of us sing, and that adds to it. We did that on purpose, so people don’t have to listen to me scream all night long.”

Inside scoop: They may be old, but they got to see all the cool bands.

Musical portrait: “Tony’s a bit younger, but Jim and I are in our late 50s,” Kelch said. “At our age, moving the stuff in the cold weather and rain wears on you. But once it’s set up and you’re playing and people like it, there’s not a better feeling in the world for a musician. It’s like painting a picture and seeing somebody really like it.”

Up next: “Play more shows, learn more songs and rock the house,” Peters said.
