Dan Haug is always pushing himself musically.

The local DJ better known as Ruckus Roboticus came out of the gates in 2008 with his stunning debut, “Playing With Scratches,” an ambitious, sample-heavy concept album. He followed that genre-hopping through a number of remixes, from rock to rap to R&B, and two 2010 releases, the “Chicks” EP and “War for Infinity,” an old-school-flavored hip-hop collaboration with rapper Adam WarRock.

Ruckus Roboticus, performing at One Eyed Jacks in Fairborn on Thursday, continues to challenge himself with “T.G.I.F (Thank God It’s Funky),” the second vinyl single from his forthcoming full-length, “The Phantom of the Disco” (Dance or Die Records). Unlike the first single, “Take Me to a Disco,” which put a postmodern spin on disco, the new single is a gritty R&B tune featuring music and lyrics by Haug, a full band and vocals from soul singer Spanky Wilson.

“I definitely wanted to branch out and work with vocalists on the album,” Haug said. “Two of them are people I approached that I really admire. One is Lady Tigra, who is on a song I’m still working on. The other one is Spanky Wilson, who is on the new single. She’s an old-school soul and R&B singer, who I discovered only recently. Several years ago she did an album with a producer named Quantic, who’s sort of like a British DJ Shadow kind of guy.

“Their album is one of my favorite albums, so when I wrote this song I had my wish list, and Spanky was at the top,” he said. “I thought she was probably impossible to get for the song, but luckily she got to hear it and liked it. It turns out she now lives in Pittsburgh, so I was actually able to go to there to record. Then she came to Columbus a few months after that to shoot the new video.”

Like “Take Me to a Disco,” “T.G.I.F (Thank God It’s Funky)” features an eye-popping video. This new clip features a number of players from the Dayton music scene, including Nathan Lewis of Magic Jackson, former Southeast Engine guitarist Conrad Dillon, who also played on the single, Jason Saunders of Oxymoronatron, former Ed vs. Radio drummer Jeff Coats and local DJs and show promoters Jonathan “Philly Phil” Phillips and Jay Madewell.

“The music video was a real group effort,” Haug said. “Most of the ‘actors’ were friends of mine that volunteered, and there’s even more people in Columbus who helped.”
