Canal Street showcasing young local talent

By Don Thrasher

To many folks, Canal Street Tavern is a venue for established local performers and national acts. However, since opening in 1981, Mick Montgomery’s club at 308 E. First St. in Dayton has also nurtured countless up-and-coming teen bands.

On Friday, Dec. 28, at 9:30 p.m., Canal Street Tavern showcases four young acts in an all-ages show.

Authors & Audio: These guys weren’t old enough to drive when they started as Dangerously Hot in 2006. A name change in 2010 signaled a shift from pop-punk to a more mature amalgam of classic rock, blues and indie rock. Artist info: www.authorsandaudio.com.

Good English: The Rasmussen sisters, Elizabeth, Leslie and Celia, are the core of this band, which formed in Oakwood in 2008. Canal Street’s support helped the group rise from high school newbies to respected band. This year, Good English participated in the Downtown Dayton Revival and Dayton Music Fest. Gathering Mercury: The punk rock band formed in early 2011 to perform at a student talent show at Stivers School for the Arts, where it finished first. A month later Gathering Mercury entered Canal Street’s annual Dayton Band Playoffs, where it finished second. Artist info: www.gatheringmercuryband.com.

The Broken Lights: This blues-infused band formed in July 2010. The members, all in their early 20s, hail from Vandalia and Tipp City. In May, the trio won the Battle of the Bands at The Mad Frog in Cincinnati. Artist info: www.facebook.com/thebrokenlights.

More info: Doors open Friday at 8 p.m. Admission is $5. Call (937) 461-9343 or visit www.canalstreettavern.com.
