Abstraction in composition can be achieved in several ways, two of which are realism depicted in unnatural colors or an unrealistic/indistinguishable design. Both of these techniques are represented in an exhibit called “Extraordinary Vision,” now showing at Studio 14 in Tipp City.

Unnatural colors: Phillip Erbaugh of Brookville and Beth Basista of Piqua are experts at this technique. In an oil landscape, Erbaugh sees cotton-candy shades of pink and blue leaves in a line of trees. Basista’s “Shades of Light” takes a close-up view of the canyons out West and turns them into shades of purple, orange and red. Others taking a broad interpretation of colors include Debra Stewart’s “Summer Breeze” and Evelyn Staub’s “Cut Glass Vase” watercolor.

“Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color, and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual reference in the world,” said Staub, the owner of the gallery.

Blurring the line between real and imagined is Rusty Harden of Trotwood. Her “Cityscape” is composed of a number of grids. Other artists in the show include Karen Benedetti of Dayton, Richard Coatney of West Milton, Chad Richard Seymour of New Carlisle, Saige Brugmann of Troy, and Ann Luken of Tipp City. Misty Brown of West Milton has a series of black and white photography exploring the issues of life, death, and spirituality.

Rina Thau of Dayton has an “Outside of the Box” series of three abstracts. Two larger oils, and a smaller acrylic in green, blue and gold hues. The muted ground is broken up with geometric designs in all three.

Terry Glass of Tipp City has two photographic works in the show. One of the pieces is titled “Red Abstract.”

“Glass’ work has a nice sense of color and spacial harmony,” said Dayton artist Phil Benton. “His negative and positive space flows in a very comfortable and balanced manner, without being forceful.”

“Break Free” is the featured artwork for this show. The large-scale mixed media was created by Parker Fritz in collaboration with Lelan Gimnick of Louisiana. The finished work is halved horizontally. The top is cool, the bottom warm, with a breakout geometric component between them.

Fritz has many quirky quotes on his website. One of them is, “Art is a headache, and I am the aspirin.”
