A friend in need: Benefit for local musician

Rob Spahr was in a car wreck in September.

By Donald Thrasher

Life can change in an instant. Such is the case of local musician Rob Spahr, who suffered several unfortunate breaks beginning with a major car crash in September.

Spahr, formerly of local jam band Too Buku, ended up in the hospital with multiple serious injuries. Following his release, he was unable to return to his foreman job with Mark Webber Landscaping Company. Spahr has been convalescing at home and enduring mounting medical bills only to recently learn he’s losing his health coverage.

That’s when the Miamisburg resident’s friend and frequent musical collaborator Max Nunery stepped in and organized a benefit concert at J-Alans in Dayton on Saturday.

“Rob is a big, brawny man,” said Nunery, a 2001 graduate of Miamisburg High School. “That’s the only reason he survived the accident. He hit that tree going 50 miles an hour. I’m a nurse, and I’ve seen the X-rays — it’s insane. He’s a type 1 diabetic, and he needs all his supplies, but his insurance is dropping him after the first of the year.

“Rob and his wife are honest people,” Nunery said. “They pay their bills, but they need some help, so we’ve organized this benefit to set them ahead and get them through the holidays.”

Saturday’s bill includes the Repeating Arms, Wheels, Shut Up, Alex Audio and a solo set from Chris Houser of The Werks.

“We’ve got a real eclectic mix of Dayton musicians and different styles of music,” Nunery said. “Some of them are really well known and some of them aren’t, but they’re all really good. And somehow we’re all connected, and we’re all good friends.”

The evening culminates with a super-jam featuring some of the participating acts plus a few special guests.

“We’ll have Houser and some of the other guys from The Werks and Cody (Otten) from The Goods,” Nunery said. “That’s going to be sweet. When we were in Too Buku we played shows with The Werks. We’re all friends and we wanted to get together and put something awesome together for Rob.”

Admission Saturday is $10. All proceeds benefit the Spahr family.

“Once people pay they’re automatically entered into the raffles,” Nunery said. “We have a whole bunch of gift prizes and handmade jewelry. My mom and stepdad had a winery in Spain and they have a huge basket of white wines and olive oils. Truth & Triumph Tattoos put in a $400 ink session. It’s going to be a pretty big to-do. A lot of people love Rob and Shannon.”
