Mix comedy and music and divide by Four Bitchin’ Babes and you have Mid Life Vices.

Four Bitchin’ Babes return to Springfield with their latest musical revue, Mid Life Vices, at the Clark State Performing Arts Center’s Kuss Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The show is part of the Clark State Performing Arts Center’s Club Kuss Series.

The group, which includes Sally Fingerett, Deirdre Flint, Debi Smith and Marcy Marxer, the latest addition to the Babes, has performed here several times in recent years.

“Springfield is a perfect market for the Babes,” said Fingerett. “There are a lot of hard-working people there who look forward to a night out, and we deliver it through music and comedy.”

Much of the show will be devoted to the Babes’ latest CD, “Mid Life Vices,” along with hits from their previous shows. Fingerett points out all of their songs are originals written by the Babes, no covers, and each with a personal slant.

“Who we are and what we do is reflected in our songs. Everybody in the audience can identify with one of us. We’ve always represented diversity.”

Although she describes a Babes show as “a musical version of TV’s ‘The View,’ ” Fingerett wants to reassure guys the show is for them as well as for families. As for the “Bitchin’ ” part of their name, that comes from the California surfer slang term for hip and fabulous.

While a four-part harmony is part of the Babes’ signature sound, they play instruments ranging from guitar, mandolin and ukulele to piano and Celtic drum.

The music blends a little blues, jazz, folk and even a parody of opera, summed up by Fingerett as “different genres with musical commonality.”

Fingerett said since her involvement in the Babes, 23 years now, she’s seen audiences grow. People see them, tell friends and bring them the next time. And audiences in turn become friends, such as has happened here.

“We want people to leave feeling better than when they came in, and when we hear people leave talking about how much fun they’ve had, we’re really blessed to do what we do.”

A lobby party will precede the show beginning at 6 p.m. with a cash bar and free appetizers.
