Cooler weather and more canning

By Lovina Eicher
Monday, August 28, 2006

We have been having beautiful weather this week. The cooler evenings and mornings makes sleeping a lot better and also makes canning vegetables not such a hot chore.

We canned our red beets and 10 quarts of bread and butter pickles. This makes a total of 66 quarts of pickles of different varieties that we have canned. I think we have enough now. I picked quite a few more from our garden this week, but gave them to my sister Emma.

We did 14 pints of homemade thick and chunky salsa also. I hope to make pizza sauce yet, but have enough tomato juice and V-8 from last year. I also have enough green beans from last year, but could use more corn. I still have some corn left from last year, but we don't like it as much as what we have this year. We are now eating from our last patch of sweet corn. We like this new variety called "tender treat." It has really big cobs. I also have some pretty nice size watermelon coming along.

A name for the ages

My husband, Joe, and I recently went with a vanload from this community to Bryant, Ind., which is a little farther south from Berne. We went to the viewing of my great-aunt Lovina Neuenschwander — age 87. I will always remember her as having a smile for everyone. She was a sister to my grandmother Graber (my mother's mother) who died at age 92. I was named after my aunt Lovina, and she was named after my great-aunt Lovina. If I'm not mistaken, my great-aunt Lovina also was named after her aunt Lovina. The name has been passed down for generations.

Fun at the zoo

Friday evening and Saturday

we and Jacob's family were at

sisters Verena and Susan's. Joe and Jacob did some minor remodeling in their kitchen and also installed some new kitchen cabinets. They need to lay the new flooring yet.

The children really enjoyed their trip to the zoo last Friday. Little Joseph fell asleep on the way home. Emma's son Benjamin and my Joseph really thought it was neat to ride the school bus. They also enjoyed riding the train and the tram at the zoo.

Joe took our buggy to the buggy shop to get it fixed. Now it's ready to use again, plus he also had brakes put on it. When Joe gets home, we plan to go to town to get groceries and some things Joe needs for the new house. He's been coming home earlier this week. It's good that it's a cooler day, which makes it easier for the horse to travel.

Since peaches are in season, try this peach pie recipe:

Peach pie

6 peaches, peeled and sliced

1 cup sweet cream

3/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup flour

1 unbaked pie crust

Arrange peaches in crust. Mix flour, sugar, and cream. Pour over peaches.

Top with the following crumb topping:

1/3 cup flour

1/3 cup sugar

3 tablespoons butter

Bake at 425 for 10 minutes. Lower heat to 350 and bake until custard has set (about 30 minutes).

Kenny G and ice, what could be better? [things to do]

Kenny G

What would Brian Boitano do? If he lived in the Miami Valley, he'd check out "Skate for the Heart" featuring saxophonist Kenny G. and Olympic and World Champion figure skaters at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Nov. 19, at the Nutter Center. Boitano won't be there, unfortunately, but here's who will: Ekaterina Gordeeva, Irina Slutskaya, Viktor Petrenko, Jeffrey Buttle, US Pairs Champions Rockne Brubaker and Keauna McLaughlin, Shae-Lynn Bourne, Caryn Kadavy, Jozef Sabovcik and Steven Cousins. Tickets are $42 to $100. More »

'Quantum of Solace'[movies]

Men have curious ways of getting over a romantic betrayal. Some try avoidance. Some go on the rebound. James Bond's method, as seen in "Quantum of Solace," involves shooting, ducking, running, bleeding, locking dudes in car trunks and the massive destruction of parts of Italy and Bolivia. Obviously Daniel Craig is back as the shoot first, drink cocktails later version of 007 in the follow-up to 2006's "Casino Royale". More »

Amelia's Bistro, Bellbrook, restaurant review [review]

Call it comfort food, gourmet style. From crab raviolis with vanilla lobster sauce, to a hand-cut and brined pork chop served with a fig jam, to a simply "Big-Ass Cake" that's a chocolate lover's dream, Amelia's has the potential to become a destination restaurant — worth the drive to Bellbrook.
