NEWS-SUN'S TOp 10 NORTH/SOUTH ATHLETES

Readers: Brigham is South's top female athlete

Brigham never won a state title at South, but the sprinter already owns five records at Wright State and a Horizon League title.

SPRINGFIELD — Tiffany Brigham's track career isn't finished yet.

But Brigham earned one of the biggest monikers in her career when she was selected the top female athlete in South High School history in a reader poll conducted by the Springfield News-Sun through Internet voting and print balloting. She was picked No. 9 by the Springfield News-Sun selection committee.

Extras

Brigham was first with readers, collecting 595 votes. South softball star Mindy Dasher finished second with 270 votes.

Brigham won several district titles and advanced to the Division I state meet in the 200-meter run as a senior in 2006. She set a personal best that day in 25.45 seconds, but that left her only sixth in her heat.

But it's her career at Wright State University that is opening eyes around the nation.

The sophomore won the Raiders' first sprint title at the Horizon League Championships on Friday, May 9, taking the crown in the 100 with a winning time of 12.30. That time qualified her for the NCAA Mideast Regional Track and Field Meet, becoming the first runner in school history to do so. She was also the runner-up in the 200 with a time of 25.35.

Brigham holds the WSU record in both events, 12.02 in the 100 and a 24.61 mark in the 200. She also holds three indoor track records.
