Hindu festival of color festival begins

As Christians celebrate Holy Week, members of the Hindu religion are celebrating Holi, a festival celebrated by painting each others, handing out candy and squirting water at other festival-goers. The holiday starts with a bonfire, followed by paint throwing. It's all to celebrated spring's arrival and the victory of good over evil.

 
  • Pope Francis, born Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, was elected pope on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, taking over the office of pontiff after Pope Benedict XVI stepped down the previous month. Pope Francis is the first South American to be named Pope. He was elected on the second day of the conclave of cardinals, on the fifth ballot.
  • Pope Benedict XVI was born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger. He stepped down in February 2013, the first pope to do so since the 15th century, and is now titled pope emeritus. He was elected as the 265th pope in April, 2005 after the death of Pope John Paul II.
  • Pope John Paul II was born Karol Józef Wojtyła. He was the second longest-serving pope, holding the office from 1978 to his death in 2005. He was considered one of the most influential people of the 20th century, helping to bring an end to communism in all of Europe. John Paul II was beatified in May 2011 after being credited to healing a French nun of Parkinson's disease.
  • Pope John Paul I, born Albino Luciani, is one of the shortest serving popes, serving only a month. He was the first pope to be born in the 20th century and the last to die in it. He followed Pope Paul VI.
  • Pope Paul VI was born Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini. He started the year in 1978 as pope before John Paul I was elected upon Paul VI's death. John Paul I passed away a month later, which gave 1978 the name The Year of Three Popes.
  • Pope John XXIII, born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, started the reformation of the Catholic church known as Vatican II. Even though he started the process, he did not live to see the conclusion and the adjustments of Catholic practices to the modern world.
  • Pope Pius XII, born Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli, was a staunch opponent to the Italian Communist Party, threatening excommunications to anyone who voted in 1948 for the Communist Party.
