  • Feb. 5 -- Running a go pattern up the left sideline on a first-and-10 from their own 12 and down 17-15, Giants wide receiver Mario Manningham made a 38-yard over-the-shoulder catch between two defenders to help set up a game-winning 6-yard run with 57 seconds to go over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. It was the Giants' second Super Bowl victory in four years over the Patriots.
  • March 7 -- With a shaky voice and tears in eyes, Peyton Manning bid farewell to Indianapolis Colts fans after the four-time MVP was cut rather than be paid a $28 million bonus. The free agent Manning then embarked on a tour of teams, settling on the Denver Broncos with whom he signed on March 21. Manning has thrown for more than 3,500 yards and 29 touchdowns and lead the Broncos to an AFC West title.
  • March 22 -- After leading the Denver Broncos to a playoff victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers, it appeared Tim Tebow had finally earned the starting job. But Peyton Manning's arrival in Denver but a scrap to those plans and the former Heisman Trophy winner was sent to the New York Jets in exchange for a fourth- and sixth-round pick. The dynamic playmaker was expected to challenge Mark Sanchez for THAT starting job, but that never happened either.
  • March 22 -- Fighting back tears, longtime Braves third baseman Chipper Jones said he would retire following the 2012 season during an emotional press conference before a spring training game in Kissimmee, Fla. Jones thanked Braves fans for their support, in Atlanta and all over the country. “It blows my mind every time I drive to the stadium and I see a family of four walking down the street with a No. 10 on their backs,” Jones said. “That, to me, still blows my mind.”
  • April 2 -- The University of Kentucky wins its eighth naitonal title, defeating Kansas 69-67 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
  • April 3 -- Baylor University women's team became the first team in NCAA basketball history to win 40 games in a season. The Lady Bears, lead by Brittney Griner, captured their second national title, defeating Notre Dame 80-61 at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
  • April 8 -- Former Georgia Bulldog Bubba Watson dons the famed green jacket after winning the Masters at Augusta National over Louis Oosthuizen on the second hole of a playoff. Watson two-putted from 12 feet after hitting his second shot from out of the trees and from 155 yards away, curving it more than 40 yards to reach the putting surface to win the 76th edition of the first major of the season.
  • April 10 -- A week after facing the media following a motorcycle accident, the University of Arkansas dismissed football coach Bobby Petrino after it was revealed he had lied about his relationship with a 25-year-old former Arkansas athlete he hired into the football office. Petrino lost $21 million in salary.
  • May 2 -- NFL commissioner Roger Goodell handed out the most severe sanctions in the league's 92-year history, suspending Saints head coach Sean Payton for the season, along with four current and former Saints players for their roles in a scandal in which players were allegedly paid out bonuses, or
  • June 22 -- Miami Heat small forward LeBron James finally got to hoist the Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy after the Heat defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games to become the 2012 NBA Champions. LeBron was named series MVP.
  • July 2 -- Following another exit in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, the Hawks and New Jersey Nets agreed on a trade that sends All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick. The Hawks then quickly moved forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris. The move cleared roughly $30 million in salary-cap space.
  • July 4 -- By the time 60,000 runners got their start the temperatures for the 43rd running of the AJC Peachtree Road Race was 71 degrees with 85-percent humidity and peaked at 85 with 58-percent humidity. Peter Kirui led a Kenyan sweep of the top three in the  men’s race with a winning time of 27 minutes, 37 seconds, the fifth-fastest time in race history. Ethiopia’s Mamitu Daska won the women’s division, completing the 6.2-mile course in 32:22.
  • July 7 -- After a series of injuries limited her play to six tournaments in 2011, Serena Williams returned to the court capturing her 14th grand slam singles title and 5th Wimbledon singles title at the All England Club. She turned in a dominant performance at the Olympics, winning gold in the women's singles bracket. Williams would capture her 15th grand slam singles title a month later, winning her 4th US Open in New York.
  • July 27 -- With all the pomp and circumstance it deserves, the Games of the XXX Olympiad got off to a rousing start. More than 10,000 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees participated in the games, which concluded Aug. 12. The United States had the most medals with 104.
  • Aug. 2 -- 16-year-old American gymnast Gabrielle Douglas wins gold in the individual all-around, becoming the first African-American woman to win the event.
  • Aug. 4 -- Michael Phelps entered the games promising it would be his final Olympics. With a gold medal in the 4 X 100 meter medley relay Phelps retired as the most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 22 medals.
  • Sept. 10 -- One of the state’s most successful basketball coaches, David Boyd, resigned after Milton High School reported allegations of recruiting to the Georgia High School Association. Boyd, who led Milton’s boys basketball program to state championships in 2010 and 2012, allegedly performed
  • Sept. 24 -- For three weeks the NFL and its referees were in a heated labor dispute. It all changed with a controversial call by replacement officials in Seattle on a Monday night. On a Hail Mary pass to end the game, one official called touchdown, the other waved it as an incomplete pass, and the league ruled it
  • Sept. 28 -- Before a standing room only crowd, the Braves paid tribute to their longtime Braves third baseman Chipper Jones in a retirement ceremony at Turner Field. A sold-out crowd of 51,910 – the seventh largest in Turner Field history – turned out to pay tribute to the future Hall of Famer.
  • Oct. 1 -- In one of the worst letdown’s in the 85-year history of the international competition, Team USA entered the final day needing just 4.5 points out of 12 singles matches to win. In an inexplicable turn of events, the European team overcame a 10-6 deficit to retain the Ryder Cup with a 14 1/2-13 1/2 victory in Medinah, Ill.
  • Oct. 5 -- Braves fans launched a flurry of bottles and other items to the field to protest a ruling by left-field umpire Sam Holbrook in the eighth inning of the Wild Card play-in game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Turner Field. The ruling on Andrelton Simmons’ pop-up, which landed 60 feet into left field, put a halt to a Braves rally while trailing 6-3. The crushing 6-3 loss to St. Louis in the Wild Card game also marked Chipper Jones' final game as a Brave.
  • Oct. 22 -- Four months after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency charged Lance Armstrong with having used illicit performance-enhancing drugs, the Union Cycliste Internationale - the sport's governing body - endorsed USADA's verdict and confirmed both a lifetime ban and the stripping of Armstrong's seven Tour de France titles. As a result, Armstrong resigned as director of his charity, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and was dropped by a number of his sponsors.
  • Oct. 28 -- The San Francisco Giants celebrate their second World Series in three years with a four-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers. Giants' third baseman Pablo Sandoval was named series MVP.
  • Oct. 8 - After a 32-game term, Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Al Groh was relieved of his duties. In his final three games, Tech gave up more than 40 points in the three consecutive games, the first time that has happened in school history. <a href=" title="Tech fires defensive coordinator" class="cmGalleryThumbImage" />
  • Nov. 4 -- Before a rowdy crowd of 70,840 fans on a Sunday night at the Georgia Dome, the Falcons hung on to pull out a 19-13 victory against the Dallas Cowboys to remain the only undefeated team in the NFL. The Falcons broke a franchise record winning their first eight games of the season. They would lose the following week to NFC South rival the Saints in New Orleans. Atlanta would avenge that loss in Week 13 at the Georgia Dome and clinch the NFC South.
  • Nov. 9 -- Before a sellout crowd of 8,600 that included about 150 former players, coaches and staff, including former coach Bobby Cremins, the Yellow Jackets christened their new $50 million home with a 79-61 rout of Tulane in the season opener for both teams.
  • Nov. 10 -- Bill Curry's career as Georgia State's head football coach concluded with 51-7 loss in Maine. Curry finished his third and final season with the Panthers 1-10. Curry remains with the university. The Panthers hired Indiana State's Trent Miles to replace Curry.
  • Nov. 28 -- 28-year-old driver Brad Keselowski was crowned NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series champ on the last race of the season at Homestead Miami Speedway, handing team owner Roger Penske his first championship.
  • Dec. 1 -- Georgia's final drive in the closing seconds of the Southeastern Conference Championship Game at the Georgia Dome came five yards short as the defending national champion Alabama won a 32-28 slugfest and a spot in the BCS national title game.
  • Well, we've seen plenty of this.  And I figure we're going to see a lot more.
