Sugarland's rock songs, ballad equally crowd-pleasing

FAIRBORN — The stage set-up at a Sugarland concert places the band members on the back and edges, allowing a lot of room for Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush to roam.
They used every inch, both sliding, jumping, and even break-dancing during their 75-minute concert on Thursday, April 24 at the Ervin J. Nutter Center.
Extras
They're a duo, but Nettles is the voice and the star. She is a likeable performer, expressive and full of energy. Her southern accent is charming and her new shorter, more blonde hair makes her look like a more-adorable Cameron Diaz. Bush is a happy a spaz attack, running from corner to corner playing his heart out on the guitar.
The show opened with the duo's first super hit, "Baby Girl", followed by "Speed of Light." Nettles has a powerful voice but knows how to use it and not overuse it. It took Mariah Carey more than a decade to learn that lesson.
She sounds even better live, knows how to change a song for a live performance and never yells. She even sounds good when she is singing and jumping, which she did a lot.
Sugarland has scored with uptempo, almost rock songs and ballads equally. Nettles even has paired with Bon Jovi on "Who Says You Can't Go Home," which she sung with Bush on Thursday.
A highlight was current hit and ballad, "Stay." And seriously to the handful of you who didn't sing along with her, thank you. For everybody else, really, the uptempo ones are the ones you join in, not the solitary ballads.
Sugarland sung Beyonce's "Irreplaceable," performed as Nettled said, "Opry style," with the duo and band at the edge of the stage. Also, Nettles offered a "sneaky peek" at a song on Sugarland's upcoming CD, a single called "It Happens."
And really, part of the pleasure of Sugarland is that Nettles and Bush are crazy. After returning for an encore, they got into giant, clear plastic balls and rolled across the tops of people in the floor seats, like a rolling country mosh pit.
They got back up on stage and rocked out on "Pour Some Sugar on Me" by Def Leppard.
Also joining them during the encore was Little Big Town, which had opened the show with a 45-minute performance of songs including a Fleetwood Mac offering and the group's trademark "Boondocks."

First off the music of both groups SugarLand and Little Big Town were well worth it. The behavior of some not all in attendance was almost beyond belief. There were a few guys that were acting worst then most teens in the back of a movie theater. They were drunk from the start of the concert which was bad, but then when the lights went down & the music started a couple guys hands & mouths started down on their dates. I understand most women like public affection but these guys were rated R easy!

I saw Sugarland in Lou, Ky. at the Trucking Show last month. They can perform so good. Jennifer is one hell of a singer. She has all the energy and Kristin is also great. When they came out in the balls it was so cute. They had no shoes on. Lady Antebellum opened for them. They are a good group also. I hope they come back here soon.

When She was here w/Kenny Chesney she was NOT wasted-she had the flu-and a bad case of it-they mentioned it at that concert then and the paper reported it so please don’t act like she is some druggie. The concert was AWESOMe-so much energy and fun! I would go to see them perform again-and Little Big Town is super too-I saw them w/Martina McBride at the Nutter last summer and love them!

Sugarland opened for Kenney Chesney a couple years ago at the Nutter. Kristian Bush was wasted, could barly stand up, the likes I had not seen since Steven Tyler had to sing, sitting on a stool at UD Arena, in ‘78.

Sugarland did a great job! So many artists are studio artists only and stink when they perform live. Sugarland delivers the goods, and their energy is awesome! I agree with the review though; don’t sing along with the ballads. Let Jennifer Nettles show her stuff. :-(
