New exhibit featuring work of female photographers to open May 1
Tuesday, April 22, 2008
One new exhibit, two venues, 50 photographers vying for a spot, and 150 images from which to choose. This may be the first year for photographer and curator Tiffany Shaw-Diaz's Women's Photography Exhibition, but that didn't keep her from getting an incredible response from the community.
"I conceived the show because I wanted to celebrate the impact that women have had in photography," said Shaw-Diaz, who is also showing works in the exhibit. "Unlike painting and other mediums, photography has always had a strong representation of women right from the beginning. Renowned photographers Julia Margaret Cameron and Gertrude Kasebier really exemplify this."

First Annual Dayton Women Photographers Exhibition
A great variety of personal tastes, subject matter, and artistic processes are represented in this show which boasts a total of 53 works by 27 photographers.
Viewers will find non-silver darkroom photography from Sinclair professor Leah Stahl and experimental photography from Scarlet Trust. There are also photo-composites from Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology professor Lisa Selvia, political and social photographs from Christina Dendy and Kidtee Hello, still-life work from arts advocate Deb Dyer, world photographs by Shirley Hess and nature photographs by Elizabeth Fleck and Jacquelynn Buck.
"The Dayton arts scene has some amazing women photographers," said Shaw-Diaz. "I find that I am continually inspired by them, and I just wanted to have an exhibition in which they were all in the same room so other people could experience their diverse talents as well."
Shaw-Diaz hopes to gain more momentum for next year's show, encouraging area women photographers to consider this exhibit in the future.
