Baseball season is upon us

Staff Writer

Friday, March 28, 2008

You don't have to be a die-hard sports fan to appreciate another season of baseball. For the casual sports observers out there, this simply means there's something else to do this spring and summer.

You don't have to know much about baseball to have a good time at a Reds game. Here are five reasons why Reds games can be fun for anyone and worth the drive to Cincinnati (and sitting in some traffic):

1. All-American food: A baseball game is the perfect place to indulge in some guilty pleasures — like processed meat in the form of hot dogs. We all know what they're made of, but there's just something so appealing about them. Maybe it's childhood nostalgia. Who knows. You can also find plenty of tasty, nonhealthy food like burgers, pretzels, ice cream and more.

2. Beer — lots of it: What's a baseball game without beer (and peanuts)? Great American Ball Park has beer a plenty. Domestic, microbrews and imports, you name it. So kick back with a beverage, talk with your friends, look for people with mullets (or any other people-watching pastime of yours) and try to figure out what RBI means. But don't drink too much. You need your senses intact to watch out for those foul balls.

3. A really cool pub: Great American Ball Park's brewpub opens three hours prior to game time for ticketholders if you plan to get there early. Dishes include everything from burgers to pizza to barbecue. The view of the ballpark is great.

4. More than baseball: Brush up on your Reds trivia before the game (that way you can at least fake it). The Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum is located on the west side of Great American Ball Park along Main Street. An adult pass is $10 and is good for the entire season.

5. A great view and atmosphere: Depending on where your seats are, you may be lucky enough to enjoy a spectacular view of the Ohio River or the downtown skyline. Especially on a warm day, what better way to spend an afternoon than getting a little sun and enjoying the river breeze.
