Milano's growing as popular late-night hotspot

Contributing Writer

Monday, April 07, 2008

Milano's Atlantic City Subs has long been known for its sandwiches and pizza. However, since renovating the Brown Street location in May 2005, the restaurant has also become something of a local late night hangout where University of Dayton students commingle with urban professionals and neighborhood patrons.

One way Milano's has developed this evening clientele is through weekly events such as karaoke on Wednesdays and live entertainment on Saturdays.

"Our rationale at first was to try to appeal to the college students and give a nice laidback, fun environment for people to enjoy," co-owner John Slaughenhaupt said. "We started off with a great response and it has turned out to be not just a college student event. Whether it's karaoke or our bands on Saturday, we definitely get people from the neighborhood and from all over Dayton."

Larry Adkisson, assistant general manager of the Brown Street location, agrees. "A lot of the bands will get an older crowd that comes in and they mix right along well with the students," he said. "Everything goes well all the time."

The Brown Street location's Saturday schedule for the rest of the month includes Vinyl Breakdown on April 19 and Farewell Fisher on April 26. Music begins each Saturday at 10 p.m. and admission is free.

"The music does pretty well," Adkisson said. "For whatever reason, acoustics sound great in our restaurant. We didn't plan it that way but that's how it turned out. Most people are surprised how good it sounds."

In addition to the revamped Brown Street location, Slaughenhaupt and his partners own Buffalo Wild Wings on Brown Street and recently opened two new Milano's restaurants.

"We opened the Beavercreek location in February but we haven't started any entertainment there yet," Slaughenhaupt said. "We have a beautiful patio at the Miami Township location down south and we do some live entertainment out there. That starts up again April 24. We're having a Land Shark party that night from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with Heidelberg Distributing and we're going to include some live entertainment on the patio.

"We want to make sure since Milano's is a Dayton tradition that we have fun," Slaughenhaupt added. "We don't want people to see us just as a place to eat. We want to be the Dayton tradition — a neighborhood hangout where you can come and obviously grab a great bite to eat but also have some fun and be entertained at the same time."
